Filmmakers' Choice: No dialogue

Film still from ENDARCHIV: A person is standing on a mound of sand with something written on it.

Mon 21.08.

In the films of this program, visual, tactile and emotional film languages attempt to convey the unspeakable. An aspect of significance has disappeared. The speechless becomes pictorial. In VYSHYVALSHITSA (Embroideress, Lyusya Matveeva, RUS 2014) dreams from a totalitarian and apocalyptic system are embroidered into a computer screen. FÄRBLEIN (Bärbel Freund, Rainer Bellenbaum, G 1992) assembles the remnants of typical GDR colors to create a silent monument to socialist exoticism. BECOMING EXTINCT (Wild Grass) (Elke Marhöfer, Mikhail Lylov, RUS 2017) attempts to destabilize the controlling, Western view of Eastern wilderness through erratic tactility. ENDARCHIV (Anna Zett, G 2019) stages performative processes of erasure in radically altered environments in 1989 and 2019. DE SPIEGEL (Marta Hryniuk, NL 2018) closes the program with a song that has no impact on the closed ears of strangers. (Anna Zett)
